The two most important factors for the growth, yield, and quality of strawberries are nutrients and irrigation.

Strawberries grown in greenhouses rely primarily on passive nutrition, with most of their nutrients supplied through irrigation. These two factors become even more critical when strawberries are grown in substrate grow bags.

Automatic irrigation solution for strawberries determine both the ability to maintain adequate moisture levels and to efficiently deliver nutrients to the plants.

For strawberries, the only suitable irrigation method that delivers high economic efficiency is drip irrigation. However, since strawberries are commonly cultivated in two ways—in substrate grow bags and in soil beds—there are two corresponding automatic irrigation methods: using drip stakes combined with pressure-compensating anti-drain drippers, and using drip lines laid along the planting beds.

Important note: Use pressure-compensating, anti-drain drippers and apply high-frequency pulsed irrigation solution.

  • Strawberries have high nutrient demands: Fertigation—applying fertilizers and nutrients through the irrigation system—is the most effective way to deliver nutrients to the plants.
  • Strawberries are commonly grown in coconut coir substrate and/or soil beds: They require frequent irrigation throughout the day with low water volumes. Only drip irrigation can meet this requirement.
  • Uniform harvesting is essential: Each plant must receive the same level of care, irrigation volume, and nutrient dosage—achieving up to ~100% uniformity.

Drip Irrigation Solution for Strawberries Grown in Substrate Bags
When strawberries are grown in substrate bags, the most suitable solution is using drip stakes. Each substrate bag will be irrigated by one drip stake.

The system includes a water supply source; filtration; automatic fertigation unit; automatic controller, solenoid valves, main and subline water distribution pipes (including lateral “spaghetti” tubing along strawberry rows); and drip stake sets consisting of: pressure-compensating drippers, 2-way or 4-way split connectors, 3mm tubing, and drip stakes.

Drip Irrigation Solution for Strawberries Grown on Soil Beds
For strawberries grown on soil beds, inline drip irrigation is typically applied. In this method, drip lines with 20 cm emitter spacing are laid along the planting rows. Each strawberry row has one drip line, or one drip line is placed between every two rows.

This setup is simpler than the drip system used for strawberries grown in substrate bags. The irrigation system includes a water supply source; filtration unit; automatic fertigation system; automatic controller, solenoid valves, main and sub-main pipelines, and drip lines.
