Walnut trees thrive in cool climates with well-drained, loose soils. Although moderately drought-tolerant, proper and timely irrigation is crucial for healthy growth, consistent flowering and fruiting—especially during dry seasons.
Drip irrigation around the root zone is the optimal method, particularly in hilly areas, sloped terrain, or regions with limited water resources. This method maintains stable root moisture and delivers water efficiently, significantly reducing operational costs.
Localized micro-sprinkler irrigation (via root or canopy sprinklers) can be applied in small-scale walnut gardens or during the early growth stages. However, excessive leaf wetting should be avoided to reduce the risk of fungal diseases.
Tip: During the young tree stage, mulch the base with straw or agricultural film to retain moisture and suppress weeds. This also helps minimize water evaporation during hot seasons.
During the flower bud differentiation period (late autumn – early winter in temperate zones), reduce irrigation to support better bud formation and avoid premature flower drop.
After harvest, resume irrigation to support new shoot development and nutrient accumulation for the next season.
In cold and dry winters, maintain moderate soil moisture to prevent soil cracking and root damage.
