AUTOMATIC COFFEE

IRRIGATION SOLUTION

Automatic irrigation system is one of the most critical factors for ensuring successful pollination and fruit setting, maintaining high yields, and keeping coffee trees healthy.

Some issues for automatic coffee irrigation solution include: the volume per irrigation session (irrigation intensity), frequency, timing, and other factors such as climate conditions and coffee variety.

In general, coffee plants prefer moist conditions. Among them, Robusta—the most widely grown variety—has better drought tolerance compared to Arabica. Robusta coffee typically requires irrigation 20–25 days after the last rainfall, with each session providing about 25mm of water, continuing through the end of January. Before flowering, a deep irrigation of 30–40mm is needed. After that, water should be supplied at 12–15mm per session until the end of February, with an irrigation cycle of 15–20 days. In particularly dry years, irrigation may need to continue through the end of March.

AUTOMATIC COFFEE IRRIGATION SOLUTION

When watered sufficiently according to physiological requirements during the flowering stage, flowers will bloom in a concentrated manner and this is a favorable factor for obligate cross-pollinated plants such as Robusta coffee. If watering is done too early (before flower buds are ready), it may lead to irregular blooming and low fruit set rates. Under-watering can cause the plant to not bloom, the flowers to wither, the branches to dry, the leaves to fall, affecting growth.

A coffee plantation remains healthy when soil moisture is maintained throughout the dry season; otherwise, the plants will turn yellow and become stunted. However, overwatering leads to water waste, higher irrigation costs, and negatively affects flowering ability and yield.

POPULAR COFFEE IRRIGATION MODELS

  • Direct root irrigation (manual basin watering): This method uses a considerable amount of water, requires significant labor, and necessitates the creation of water basins around each tree. In return, the initial investment cost is relatively low—only needing a pump and irrigation pipes to deliver water directly to the base of the coffee plants.
  • Sprinkler irrigation: The greatest advantage of using sprinkler irrigation for coffee trees is the significant reduction in labor, along with the ability to irrigate proactively based on the physiological needs of the plants. This method is especially suitable for large plantations. However, the investment cost is usually high. With this method, special attention must be paid to selecting suitable sprinkler heads, piping systems, and pumps.
  • Drip irrigation for coffee plants: This is the most advanced irrigation method currently applied to coffee cultivation. It saves water, reduces labor, lowers pump operating costs, improves fertilizer efficiency (by applying it through the irrigation system), and helps minimize weed growth and pests. However, this method also has some limitations, such as the requirement for clean irrigation water, potential restriction of root zone development, and high initial investment costs.

TYPICAL AUTOMATIC COFFEE IRRIGATION SYSTEM

Large Radius Coffee Irrigation Sprinkler System
In basalt red soil areas, coffee irrigation sprinklers are widely used, typically the Sky 41 Pro irrigation gun. Farmers can use either mobile or fixed sprinkler rigs.

For newly planted coffee in the establishment phase, the irrigation volume is about 400-500 m³ per watering session. For mature, commercial coffee trees, the volume is approximately 600-700 m³ per session. The irrigation cycle is usually every 20-25 days. During the flowering stimulation period, increase the irrigation volume by about 15%.

Drip Irrigation System for Coffee Trees

Drip Irrigation System for Coffee Trees
As previously mentioned, the drip irrigation system for coffee trees offers numerous benefits. It is especially well-suited for Arabica coffee, multi-stem coffee trees, areas with limited water supply, or large-scale farms.

Drip irrigation provides just the right amount of water to coffee trees while significantly saving water, fuel for pump operation, labor, and fertilizer.

Under-Canopy Sprinkler Irrigation System for Coffee Trees

The under-canopy sprinkler irrigation system for coffee trees has been proven to provide a balanced solution between investment and operational costs, sufficient water supply during flowering periods, and the ability to deliver water-soluble fertilizers.

This irrigation method typically includes:

  • Central unit: Water source, pump, irrigation system controller, solenoid valves, and filtration system.
  • Water distribution network: Main pipelines deliver water to irrigation zones, and sub-main (fishbone) lines carry water to each coffee row.
  • Under-canopy sprinkler heads specifically designed for coffee trees.

Nhà Bè Agri supplies two specialized sprinkler models for this system: Driptec Mini Sprinkler DR07  and Driptec Micro Sprinkler.
