Greenhouse and net house irrigation solution have certain characteristics, such as plants often being grown in grow bags, coco coir bags, or hydroponically instead of in soil beds. In greenhouses, crops do not receive natural rainfall, and irrigation depends entirely on artificial systems. Temperatures inside greenhouses are often higher than outdoor conditions. Most greenhouse and net house irrigation systems serve multiple functions: watering, fertilizing and supplying nutrients, cooling and humidifying to create a favorable environment for plant growth.

Therefore, automatic irrigation systems in greenhouses and net houses play a particularly important role. Common greenhouse and net house irrigation systems usually include: drip irrigation using stakes, misting systems for cooling, and drip irrigation using drip lines.

As previously shared, below is a more detailed overview from Nha Be Agri regarding the most common solutions applied in automatic irrigation for greenhouses and net houses.

  1. Drip irrigation for plants grown in grow bags (substrate bags): For crops grown in grow bags, the substrate (e.g. coco coir) primarily serves as a medium for the roots to anchor. The substrate essentially contains no nutrients. Plant roots receive water and nutrients entirely through the automatic irrigation system. Drip stakes are typically used by inserting them directly into the grow bags, allowing water and nutrients to spread throughout the entire volume of the bag.

  2. Misting for cooling, humidifying, and providing water to plants: Mist nozzles can be hung from the greenhouse/net house roof or mounted on irrigation poles. For the purpose of cooling and humidifying, ultra-fine mist nozzles are hung overhead; for the purpose of humidifying and watering crops, mist nozzles with larger droplet sizes are used.

  3. Drip irrigation using drip lines for crops grown in soil beds: In practice, certain crops are often grown directly in the ground—such as chrysanthemums, lilies, and some vegetables and fruits like melons, tomatoes, and bell peppers. In this case, drip lines are typically applied. The irrigation system delivers water and nutrients directly to the plant roots.

Drip Irrigation Solution for Greenhouses

Many types of crops grown in greenhouses and net houses are cultivated in grow bags. The most suitable irrigation solution for this cultivation method is the use of drip stakes. Each grow bag will be irrigated using one drip stake.

The system will include a water source; filtration unit; automatic fertigation system; automatic controller, solenoid valves, main and sub-main water pipelines (laid along the rows of grow bags); and a drip stake kit (including a dripper, 2-way or 4-way splitter, a piece of 3x5mm soft PE tubing, and a drip stake).

Misting Irrigation Solution for Cooling Greenhouses

Due to the greenhouse effect (even though modern greenhouse film technologies have significantly reduced heat absorption), the temperature inside greenhouses is often quite high, requiring growers to install misting systems for cooling and humidity control.

This system can serve one or both of the following purposes: cooling through misting, and maintaining humidity while providing water for the crops. For cooling only, fine mist nozzles should be used; for combined cooling and irrigation, misting nozzles with larger droplet sizes can be applied.

Some common crops typically grown directly on soil beds inside greenhouses include melons, tomatoes, bell peppers, lilies, chrysanthemums, etc. For this cultivation method, the drip irrigation system with drip lines running along the crop rows is commonly applied. To optimize investment costs, a double-row planting method (two crop rows sharing one drip line) is recommended.
