The selection of an automatic irrigation technique for medicinal plants mainly depends on factors such as planting density, climatic and soil conditions, and available water sources.

Most medicinal plants, especially those harvested for their leaves, require a large amount of water and frequent irrigation, often on a daily basis, so sprinkler irrigation may be applied.

However, for some medicinal plants that can thrive in arid and low-water areas, drip irrigation should be considered.

Another important factor is the planting pattern and density, which directly affects the selection of automatic irrigation techniques for medicinal plants. For densely planted crops, sprinkler irrigation should be applied. For crops with widely spaced rows (usually more than 1 meter apart), drip irrigation should be applied. Note: when applying drip irrigation, farmers should plant in double rows to save on drip tubing investment costs.

Drip Irrigation Method for Medicinal Plants


Many types of medicinal plants are grown on an industrial scale, over large areas, using automatic irrigation technology, with drip irrigation being the most typical method. Medicinal plants that can be irrigated using the drip method include Polyscias fruticosa (Đinh lăng), Solanum procumbens (cà gai leo), etc.

Tip: Crops planted with row spacing over 1 meter can use drip irrigation. To save on investment costs and increase efficiency, farmers should plant in double rows — two plant rows per bed, with a drip line laid in the middle.

This drip irrigation method is quite simple; basically, the system includes a water supply source, water delivery pipe, and a drip line laid along each plant row.

Sprinkler Irrigation Method for Medicinal Plants


Sprinkler irrigation methods are quite diverse, including overhead sprinkler irrigation using sprinkler heads, rain pipe irrigation, or localized root-zone irrigation.

Overhead irrigation is commonly applied for densely planted crops or those sown by broadcasting (extremely dense, non-row planting). Some medicinal plants suitable for overhead sprinkler irrigation include Morinda officinalis (ba kích), Perilla frutescens (tía tô), Jasminum subtriplinerve (chè lá vằng), and Gynostemma pentaphyllum (giảo cổ lam)…

Meanwhile, localized sprinkler irrigation is more appropriate for woody medicinal plants with tall and large canopies, and wide spacing. Typical examples include Sophora japonica (hoa hè), Eucalyptus (khuynh diệp), and Punica granatum (lựu)…
