Automatic Irrigation for Sugarcane. About 5–6 years ago, in the sugarcane heartland of Son Nguyen Commune, Son Hoa District – Phu Yen, farmers could hardly believe that in one of the hottest and driest areas of the South Central region—with arid land and water scarcity—there could be fields yielding up to 120 tons/ha, and even some areas reaching 150 tons/ha.

Over a year before that, I, along with an Australian expert (Mr. Michael Laughlin), met and persuaded a farmer to try a drip irrigation system on about 0.5 hectares right in his own garden. He agreed, and just a year later, his family’s automated irrigation area expanded to over 20 hectares. That is the story of a skilled farmer, Mr. Doan Dac Mien.

AUTOMATIC SUGARCANE IRRIGATION SOLUTION

  • When applying automatic irrigation for sugarcane, keep in mind the following: It is recommended to plant sugarcane in double rows, with the bed width about 70–90 cm. The distance between the centers of two beds should be 1.2–1.5 m.

  • Lay one drip irrigation line between each double row. Water will soak about 30 cm on each side, ensuring precise and sufficient supply to the root zone.

  • The main water supply pipes can be either rigid PVC pipes or collapsible pipes. Rigid pipes can be buried underground for long-term use; collapsible pipes are easier to roll up but wear out faster.

  • The drip lines can be thin-walled (0.15 mm–0.20 mm) or thick-walled (0.3 mm or more) for multi-year reuse.

  • The optimal dripper spacing is 20 cm. Each dripper has a flow rate of 1.4 or 2.0 liters/hour.

  • The pump capacity must be calculated based on the total water flow needed per valve.

  • For large plantations, it’s advisable to divide the system into zones with multiple valves so each area can be irrigated in turn.

Drip Irrigation Pipes for Sugarcane

The irrigation model uses surface-laid pipes. Each sugarcane row (either double or single row) is supplied with one drip irrigation pipe. The drip pipe is connected to the branch pipe through a connector device (commonly called a manifold). Branch pipes can use flat pipes (flat PE pipes or flat PVC pipes). Flat pipes have the advantage of low cost and can be rolled up and stored after each irrigation season.

The sprinkler pipe irrigation model is also quite commonly applied. This model is easy to install and use, allows visual monitoring, and reduces pipe clogging. Typically, a sprinkler pipe is laid every 3-4 meters. The drawback of the sprinkler pipe method is that it is only suitable when the sugarcane plants are still young.
