Automatic Cassava Irrigation. Cassava is a drought-tolerant crop; however, to survive, it requires a minimum of 50mm of rainfall (or irrigation water) per month during the first six months of growth, with optimal water needs around 1000mm per year. In Nigeria, field trials have shown that cassava tuber yields increased sixfold when irrigation levels from a drip system matched the crop’s optimal water requirements (according to Wikifarmer).

The most commonly applied method for automatic cassava irrigation is drip irrigation, which has been proven to be the most efficient solution compared to other irrigation methods. Drip irrigation saves water, allows for large-scale coverage, enables fertigation (thus significantly reducing fertilizer usage), and is energy-efficient in terms of pumping requirements.

The optimal irrigation water requirement for cassava is ~1000mm throughout the growth cycle, especially more in the first 3 months. A typical automatic cassava irrigation solution is drip irrigation, which can provide 10mm to 15mm of water per hour. (See also Calculating irrigation flow)
Evaluating irrigation water needs and determining an irrigation schedule for cassava according to the plant’s growth cycle is important and necessary for the growth of cassava. Irrigation is essential for cassava cultivation because it is used in places with irregular rainfall, during the dry season or during drought.
Depending on actual conditions, cassava can grow thanks to natural rainfall, through sprinkler irrigation systems, flood irrigation… but the most effective is drip irrigation. Drip irrigation provides the exact amount of water to the plant. Drip irrigation reduces evaporation loss and eliminates runoff with water efficiency of up to 90%, more efficient than other irrigation solutions.
Automatic cassava irrigation via drip systems has been proven to be a highly successful approach—optimizing water use, allowing fertigation, and increasing both yield and starch content. Drip irrigation applies water slowly and evenly with low pressure requirements, thereby also reducing energy consumption.

IRRIGATION SYSTEM MODEL FOR CASSAVA

The drip irrigation along-furrow model is the most common and effective system for cassava (manioc) cultivation. In this setup, the system includes a water source such as a borehole or pond. Water is pumped and delivered to the field through a network of water pipes (commonly using flat PVC hoses). From this main distribution network, water is supplied directly to the root zone of each plant via drip irrigation lines.

The drip lines are laid along each cassava furrow, with one line per furrow (typical row spacing is 1.3 to 1.6 meters).

Important notes for farmers:

  • Use double-row (twin-row) planting, with a spacing of about 1.6 meters between the centers of two furrows when using the drip irrigation method.

  • You can choose drip lines with 20 cm emitter spacing and a flow rate of 1.4 to 2.0 liters/hour per emitter. The irrigation volume can reach 10 to 15 mm per hour of watering.
